For those of you like me who like to kick back with a quality cigar or two during your Florida vacation, then a visit the Corona Cigars at 7792 West Sand Lake Road, just off the I4 in-between Universal Studios and SeaWorld in Orlando.

From the front, you get the feeling that this is somewhere special for cigar lovers, with locals and visitor’s alike sitting at the shaded tables enjoying their recent purchases along with a cool drink or two. You have already smelt the woody and distinctive aroma of fine cigars as you enter the building. To the is a small bar area serving local and international alcoholic drinks, a large screen television keeps the patrons interest as they too sit and relax with their choice of cigar. To the right is where the fun is a huge area dedicated to cigars and everything to do with storing, preparing and smoking them.

Whether you are the type who is inspired by the size and shape of a cigar or its manufacturer, you cannot help but admire the scenery and its scent The humidors are a work of art, the cigar cutters range from the ordinary to the ultimate, both in price and appearance, but the main attraction is without doubt the thousands of cigars, all beautifully presented and clearly marked with their respective prices. As you would expect the price range covers both ends of the cigar spectrum as does the range, which popular names such a s Cohiba, Romeo & Juliet and Davidoff sharing floor space with some of the lesser names.

The staff all wearing the Corona Cigar uniform are quietly helpful and very knowledgeable about their stock, to the point that after a few precise questions they can help you find just what you are looking for. This is not a place where you experience aggressive sales techniques, this is a place of peaceful reflection, and somewhere relaxation is the order of the day. There is something for everyone’s taste and price range at Corona Cigars, which provides a great alternative to the many other Orlando attractions.

Located off Buena Vista Drive, and opposite Disney’s fabulous Dolphin Resort, Fantasia Mini Golf is nestled into a quiet corner of Disney World, Florida.
Whether you are a seasoned golfer with an appetite for competition or a family or group of friends looking some fun in the sun, Fantasia Golf with its two very distinct courses has something for every one.
Car parking is free, and leaves you a short walk to the entrance. Adorned with yes you guessed another statue of Mickey Mouse, the entrance consists of a small kiosk, toilets and details of the two courses available for play.
To the left is the Fantasia Fairways Course. Do not be fooled by the name, this is not for the faint hearted or indeed any groups looking for some brightly coloured highly inventive and quirky environment in which to enjoy yourself. No this 18 hole course consists of long fairways, bunkers and other hazards. With its lengthy holes The Fantasia Fairways Course is like nothing I had seen before, and nor had my family looking at their faces of horror. Simply put this course is a challenge, but a fun, one which makes you think, a welcome change from just hitting your ball towards the hole. Yes it can be frustrating with the long fairways of astro turf, they are both fast and very undulating, but this all adds to the game. Then when you reach the green identified by the darker colour of the flooring, you must judge the speed and contours to sink that put before moving on.
My advice to anyone visiting Fantasia Golf for the first time, is take a look at The Fantasia Fairways Course before you make your decision.
So now to the Fantasia Gardens course, located to the right of the entrance, this course is in keeping with the ‘crazy golf’ experience, that people of all ages and abilities have come to love. As would expect from Disney though, this is not an ordinary 18 hole crazy golf course, oh no here you never quite know what is going to happen next. Taking it’s inspiration from Disney’s classic film Fantasia, Fantasia Gardens is a colourful escape with some dynamic interaction between player and surroundings, which will not only get your attention, but it will also keep you guessing. For those good or fortunate players amongst your group, they will be rewarded for their clever or lucky shots, with a rendition of music!
With its inclines, moving structures and colourful surroundings and all round fun factor, the Fantasia Gardens course, and Walt Disney World, is a must for budding golfers and those just looking for that bit of silly enjoyment.
At the conclusion of your round, you will be rewarded with a limited edition ball, a great gesture from the guys at Disney World Resort, Florida.
Both courses have foliage around them, so I would advise taking some repellent if you choose to go later in the day. In contrast, if you intend visiting any time around early to late afternoon, sunscreen and a hat are a must, as is a large bottle or two of water.
Both courses are open daily from 0700 to 2300, and the cost at the time of writing this article is/was $12+tax per adult, and $10+tax for younger player aged 9 and under.
Go on have some fun on the golf course at Fantasia Mini Golf at Walt Disney World, Florida, it’s magical!

Dollar Tree shops are fast becoming a favourite amongst international visitors to Orlando, thanks to the outlets cheap prices, variation of branded products and the growing numbers of outlets. As the name suggests, everything is $1 (plus tax), and before you start with the stereotypical thoughts and assumptions, this isn’t full of useless merchandise, Dollar Tree stores sell everything from Batteries to paper plates.
One of the main advantages of using such a cheap outlet is that you have the option of reducing the amount of weight you have in your luggage as a result of your family’s toiletries. Yes I know that some of you prefer or need a specific brand or type of hair product, but if Palmolive or Vidal Sasoon will suffice then leave it at home. Men’s grooming is catered for too, with plenty of shaving creams etc on offer. For the kids,
Dollar Tree is an ideal place to buy those all important pool toys, including the good old favourite noodle which for those who are understandably puzzled by the name they are a long piece of coloured foam which floats, kids love them. General household cleaning products are another great buy at Dollar Tree, don’t pay extra at Wal-Mart.
As for food, we get our Minute Maid frozen drinks and water from Dollar Tree, not to mention the tub of Ben and Jerrys ice cream.
All in all Dollar Tree stores are a cheaper alternative to the larger super stores but without a compromise.

For those of you planning or looking forward to your vacation, and intend using your credit card to make purchases whilst you are abroad beware, the potentially costly dynamic currency conversion charges could be waiting for you.

Many credit cards service providers make a charge for any transactions made outside the purchaser’s country of origin; this is called a foreign transaction fee, and is normally in the region of 2.75% of the total purchase price. Some of you will already thinking that this charge is both unfair and excessive, however this charge which allows the card company to cover their expense for turning the foreign currency back into that of your own currency, is far less that what is called the Dynamic Currency Conversion.

Quite simply this potential charge can occur when a consumer makes a purchase using their credit card and either chooses to do so in his/her currency having been asked by a member of staff or no such request is made by the retailer and the charge is automatically applied. At that charge, is a whopping 4%.

The problem here is that it is the retailer who benefits, as they levy the charge at a rate determined by them! And even though the legislation states that a consumer must be asked in what currency they prefer there purchases to be paid in, this may often not be the case.

If you are caught out by this unscrupulous behaviour, the consumer is well within their rights to request the payment be cancelled and completed in the local currency.

Dynamic Currency Conversion is operated in many countries throughout Europe and the United States Of America. There does not appear to be a specific type of retailer who operates this process, and as such you should ask for the payment to be made in the local currency as you go through the payment process.

As with many visitors to the fabulous state of Florida, my family and I like to spend some time in and around the many great shopping malls and outlets, which, thanks to the exchange rate provide overseas visitors with the opportunity to find some real bargains.
For those delicate purchases or slightly more expensive one, the sensible payments are via a credit card with its added security of providing insurance for your purchase.
Exchange rates between the various card providers do differ slightly, however in my experience this is very small. Probably the best value for money card so far is that offered by the post office, although they don’t provide any internet based banking option, which can be inconvenient at times.

My advice though before you rush out and fill your pockets with a whole host of different cards, is this;

1. Speak to your current card provider(s) and ask them what their rate is on that day. Then use the likes of the Travelex web site to make a comparison.
2. Confirm what charges if any you will incur when using your card abroad.
3. Confirm the level of insurance is provided for items bought with the credit card, and what if any is the excess charge.
4. Then if you are happy to proceed to use their card on holiday, inform them of your departure and return dates, this helps avoid those embarrassing occasions when you are at the till with a queue behind you only to be told by the cashier’ Sorry your card has been rejected” It also helps your provider identify any potential fraudulent usage after your return.

Remember many retailers in Orlando and Florida require any payments being made with a credit card to be accompanied with photographic identification. Whilst this may seem a bit of a bind, it is actually set up and operated in a way so to prevent the fraudulent use of credit cards, and remember if you are asked what currency you want the transaction in, ALWAYS choose the local currency, doing so is cheaper and saves you incurring extra charges of around 4%

Who is this Harry Potter guy? Well whoever he is he’s caught both people’s imagination and attention that was more than apparent when I went to Universal Studios, Orlando along with tens of thousands of other people during July and August 2010.
In the 10 years of visiting Universal Studios, in Orlando, I had never seen it so busy. From the minute you step off the moving walkway, and proceed towards the area where visitors choose to turn right towards Universal Studios or walk straight on towards Islands Of Adventure, it was obvious which of these two great theme parks held the biggest attraction. Islands Of Adventure and that kid in the ridiculous school uniform Harry Potter.
But it was though some of the visitors actually thought they where going to school, dressed in full or part Hogwarts uniform, it was surreal to hear then reciting lines and spells from the film, and then there were the children. Typically hyper with excitement at the thought of not only going to Universal Studios, but seeing their icon and hero Harry Potter, many sported small tattoos above there right eye, perhaps they had cut themselves on the round rimmed glasses?
Entering Islands Of Adventure, those of us who had arrived well before the official 9AM opening time for guests not staying at one of the resort hotels, were shepherded around to the left, passed the amazing Hulk ride and onwards to Potter Land. It was though nothing else in the park mattered, as visitors ignored the opportunity to ride some of Orlando’s best roller coasters and thrill rides without the need to queue.
Entering The Jurassic Park area, it become apparent that just getting into the Potter Land, was going to require some serious time, and so at 8.45AM, I began the wait.
It was then that Universal Studio’s marketing strategy kicked in, as employees began walking the long line of people offering their over priced Express Tickets for sale, and understandably faced with a lengthy wait in the ever increasing heat, they began to sell and sell and sell.
So whilst the ‘ordinary’ queue reduced in length, little did those just arriving know of the other queue for those with the Express Tickets. And resort hotel guests who had also been given priority, and rightly so.
Crossing the bridge into this unbelievably popular Wizarding World Of Harry Potter, the visual effect of this mini metropolis was simply amazing. People were walking around mouths open and heads up, so was the visual impact.
Complete with 5 individually themed shops, 1 restaurant and 3 very different rides, the best way to describe its size is compact, and the star attraction? Well all of it really there were queues for everything from the shops, to the rides and even the small hand carts used to sell Potter’s favourite tipple Butter Beer!
Those with small impressionable children prepare for a financial shock; the prices of many items of Potter merchandise are out of this world, and appear to have been made up just like the film!
Unfortunately however this was not the only downside to this the busiest theme park in Orlando, no the normally spotless surroundings and facilities had been affected too. The toilets both male and female were quite simply disgusting. Now I know that this is as a result of those who use them, however Universal in the past has managed to maintain these areas very well. Perhaps there cleaning staff were part of the extra staff used to manage the lines outside and within Potter Land, I don’t know.
For some reason, and I believe it was due to its popularity, the car parking fees at Universal this year were higher than any other major theme park in Orlando. Yes Disney was a whole dollar better value for money.
So my advice is this, get there early or don’t bother till around 4PM. However due to the sheer number of Express Tickets sold, the remaining ride times were high, as an example the normally 30 minute or so wait time for Dudley Do Right Rip Saw Falls, rocketed to 110 minutes!

Although my family and I have flown to Florida on numerous previous occasions, we have never flown with Virgin Atlantic. That was until July 2010 when we flew direct from Manchester to Orlando International.

Previous years have seen us fly from our local airport into Gatwick for our onward flight into Orlando, however since BA lost the domestic route to Fly Be, it meant that we would have to endure a bus transfer between Heathrow and Gatwick to pick up our onward flights both on the outgoing and return journeys.

We decided that this would detract from our normally enjoyable flights, and so decided to book with Virgin Atlantic, whose price for an economy fare was comparable to those of BA with the inclusion of a domestic flight.

The following account is based on my personal experience, opinions and comparisons between Virgin Atlantic and British Airways.

The first notable difference was in the online booking process, the Virgin Atlantic web site provides a far slicker, welcoming and informative way of planning and booking the various services you require. Unlike the bland British Airways web site, this appears clinical and quite matter of fact in comparison.

During the time leading up to the date of departure, Virgin Atlantic sent a number of emails informing me of various addition services such as car hire, which when bought under the Flying Club program provided a return of 2 miles for every pound spent. Again these were friendly and worthwhile.

24 hours prior to departure, the online check in opened, we had previously chosen our preferred seating, however it was during the online check in procedure that it became apparent that only a limited percentage of seats are available during this process, and that if someone chose completing it before me could request and be given our preferred seats. The moral of the story is if you are going to use this option, do it as early as possible.

Having arrived at the airport with our printed boarding cards in hand, we made our way to the baggage drop off area. This is a streamline process which allows passengers to expedite their way to the departure lounge by allowing them the option of cutting out the need to join the lengthy ques.

Arriving at the gate, the huge 747-400 named English Rose, stood waiting for its passengers to board. Stepping onto the aircraft however was rather disappointing, I had expected in keeping with the Virgin brand, a vibrant and modern interior, instead what I saw a mixture of red, grey and purple seats. It was apparent that this particular aircraft was somewhat dated, this was reinforced by the very old in seat screens, and broken and cracked arm rests.

This was a stark contrast to the many Boeing 777 aircraft used by British Airways, which I have to say have always been nothing but uniformed and in a very good state of repair. I am aware that the Boeing 747’s have been in service a lot longer than the 777; however it was still a disappointment coming from Virgin.

Taking off on time, the 8 hour journey began, and moments after take off the screens flashed to life allowing passengers to tune to their preferred av channel. To my surprise however there were no games, even though Virgin Atlantic s web site stated that even in economy cabins the entertainment included video games, something which is only available to World Traveller plus passengers and above on British Airways flights. Another advantage BA had over the Virgin system was that passengers could view their programme or film on demand and could pause it should the need arise. Virgins system was quite antiquated in that the recordings were shown on a loop and could not be paused.

To some this may be a minor point, however over the course of a long haul flight, the functionality on the British Airways aircraft really comes into its own, and provides a truly personal service by allowing passengers to view what they want when they want. British airways won this challenge hands down.

I had heard nothing but good reports about the service provided onboard Virgin Atlantic flights and I have to say I agree, however at no time did I hear it mentioned, that refreshments were available throughout the course of the flight from the galley area, something which normally encourages passengers to rise from their seats and walk to the galley, which leads me onto another area which was lacking, in flight wellbeing.

I am sure that a large number of passengers are aware of the risks of DVT (deep vein thrombosis), however I think it is important to make mention of how to minimise the risk throughout the flight. In comparison, BA actually has a video presentation of how to reduce the risks of DVT, which I am sure, is taken on board by a large number of passengers.

The food on board the Virgin Atlantic flight was in keeping with ‘aeroplane food’ as my children call it, as were the drinks, although having requested a whiskey and dry ginger I was pleased to see the alcohol being poured from a bottle instead of those small bottles provided by BA. However I have to say that ‘White Label’ whiskey is no comparison for a ‘branded’ whiskey! So all in all, the refreshments and food served by the two carriers are comparable to one another.

The Virgin Atlantic crew worked tirelessly throughout the flight, and I have to say they were in my opinion more approachable to some crew which I have experienced on British Airways flights. For some reason the BA brand seems to encourage a slight arrogance within some of its staff. It’s a real shame, and detracts from the passenger experience.

I suspect that a passengers first consideration when comparing different carriers, is the cost and locality of the departure airport. There after I would expect the priorities would move towards the likes of the in flight service and entertainment Although British Airways’ fleet of Boeing 777 aircraft provide a a greater level of in flight entertainment and enjoyment as a result of the younger age and better condition of the aircraft, I would put Virgin Atlantic slightly ahead on the level of in flight service provided by the more approachable cabin crew.

I hope this helps, and look forward to reading details of your experiences of these two high profile carriers

With the ever-increasing costs of transatlantic flights, this year’s annual Florida vacation offered me an ideal opportunity to seek out a cheaper alternative to our usual scheduled flights, which consisted of flights from Newcastle to Gatwick, then Gatwick direct to Orlando International Airport (MCO). Arriving at 3.25pm local time.
To allow me to ensure that my flights we indeed cheaper than booking direct flights, I needed to confirm the total cost of my usual route. This fare was for 2 adults and 2 children aged 14 and 11 years.
British Airways returned a total price of £4,473.60
My intention was to identify a transatlantic carrier, who had partner airlines, which operated domestic flights within America. This would make my journey easier, by allowing me to check my baggage in once at my point of departure, after which I simply picked it up at my destination.
After much time searching the Internet and national papers, I decided to book my return transatlantic flights with Air France. Although I had no experience of this carrier, I had heard some good reports.
Our Initial flight departed Newcastle, arriving at Charles De Gaulle, where I transferred within an hour for my onward journey to JFK New York. The total cost of these return flights was £2,319.60
I then set about booking my domestic flights. However having decided to take the opportunity to spend some time in New York, meant that I did not need to book onward flights on the date of my arrival in America. Out of interest however, I set about looking for flights, which allowed me to continue onto Florida that same day. The total cost of the internal flights was £466.40, bringing may total airfare to a respectable £2786 inclusive of all taxes, a saving of £1687.60!
A by-product of flying indirect to Florida is the fact that when you arrive at your destination, you do not have to go through immigration, as this is done at the first point of entry into America.
My chosen flights meant that I did not have to endure any travelling between airports, I simply landed and departed from the same one, albeit on my forward journey some 5 days after arriving. This was also an advantage over my usual British Airways flights, which would have required a coach trip between Gatwick and Heathrow airports both on my outward and return journeys.
For those thinking about the delay in arriving in Orlando, Florida having travelled via an indirect route, had I chosen to make my onward journey from JFK airport to Orlando International I would have arrived just over 2 hours after the British Airways flight.
Arriving in Florida International Airport, I anticipated the normal lengthy wait in the rental car queue, however having arrived on a domestic flight meant that this process was the quickest that I had ever experienced taking no more than 20 minutes.
So there you have it, cheaper flights are out there, you just need to be flexible in your approach to how you reach your chosen destination, and if like my family and I the savings pay for themselves.
